Language is the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way or the system of communication used by a particular community or country. Language also has become the important part in our life could explain about our nation, where we live, what environmental we stay or live.

There has prediction about around 100 languages from 6500 languages will be disappeared in every year. More or less 100 languages that are spoken in California and more than 200 languages of Aborigine in Australia have disappeared. I have predicted that half of languages in world will be disappeared in next century. The question is how about the existence of our native languages in next 20 years?

I have predicted that half of language in the world will be totally disappeared in next 20 years. This prediction could be proven by evidences. In California and Oregon, Wailaki, Nongati, Lassik, Sinkyone, Umpqua, Coquille, Appelegate, and Cheto have died. As we know that, Ubykh, a language in Turkey has died in 1992. In USA, Kalapuya just has 1 or two speakers. Cowlitz just has possibility 2 speakers remaining from population of about 200. Coptic, a language has been replaced by Arabic. How about Ainu, a language in Hokkaido, Japan? How about in Indonesia?

Based on opinion above, the extinction of language has become the very important issue in science. I am apprehensive in this situation, but we also don’t know about hundred languages have not identified yet. Without documentation and revitalization efforts, language as an accumulation of human knowledge or science will be totally disappeared, or may be lost without documentation.

This phenomenon is effect of bilingualism. Nation language has a role in “pulling over” the native languages, because of politic. In economic, nation language is more important than native language. As the result, nation language is going to grown and local language has leaved behind. The tendency of nation language as the mother language in daily communication also gives an effort in making a local language as the one of extinct languages. Besides, the rapid of morality, the descending of local languages user in some of region will be descended by intermarriage of ethnic which bring nation language as their daily language.

Based on Atlas of the World’s Language in Danger of Disappearing, UNESCO, Indonesia has more than 640 local languages which more than 400 languages of Malayo-Polinesia and 240 languages are Papua Languages (2001:40). From that amount, more or less 154 languages must be revitalized, 135 languages have classified as extinct language and 15 languages absolutely are died. If this situation is growing fast, I am afraid that could be happened in other local languages in Indonesia.

This situation will bring the new problem in next 20 years. The pressure of nation and international languages toward local languages could kill 2000 languages from 6500 languages in the world based on the prediction above. This condition could be more complex if the extinction of language is faster than before. Not only 2000 languages could be disappeared in this world but also the unknown languages that never be recorded in world document are lost, too.

The most languages are used by speaker will be the main problem in destroying local languages. Technology and media of information have used English and common language that used by people. The value of language will appear in international languages. International language has become the daily language for people and they will forget about their local language. No doubt, if we do not have the way in preventing our local language from extinction, our nation language could be disappeared.

We have to know local languages are our precious literatures and assets. A language could explain who we are and what tribe we are. If this happened, we have made the new era in next 20 years. No local languages anymore in our world.

From here, we must find the way out in preventing our local language from the extinction. The first act as the preventing action, we can start from making a local fairytale movie with local language as the main language. In local advertisement, we can use local inviting expression language. Second, we can start on internet. We invite government to make a site for local language. For example, Kutai Kartanegara (a regency in East Kalimantan) has own site about Kutai language. In this site, we can find news, funniest stories, and share everything in Kutai Language. Third, we must show local languages are fun and popular by performing local language in theater. We also can use short story as the medium for preserving local language. Forth, we can preserve local language by doing a festival of traditional, customs, and traditional popular music. If we can do this preventing continual in every year, I believe we have descended the disappearing of language in the world. Besides, we also do not forget that we have lost some language in the world and we must to revive those languages. For example, Japan has tried to revive Ainu from extinction. Just eight people spoke Ainu on the island of Hokkaido in the late 1980s, but now it is being revived after years of ostracism and decline. It is a proof that we could revive our extinct language. But, it is still return to the people who want to revive our heritage from extinction. If majority people don’t think about how important local language, we was trapped in one language in our future.

In our hand, we purpose about where will we bring local language in this world? Disappear or die?
Let’s we hold out our local languages and protect them from the extinction!
